Is it OK to put duct tape over a surge-protector cord my cat chewed on?
He left some pretty big tooth marks, but didn’t chew through to the wire anywhere. The cord doesn’t feel hot or anything. I’m probably going to replace it with a new surge protector soon and spray it with bitter apple, but do I really _have_ to replace it? Can I just patch it with duct tape and spray it, or is a chewed cord always a fire hazard?
Replace it — they’re pretty cheap.
Here’s how to prevent pets from ruining cords: You can get clear tygon tubing at the hardware store or home improvement store. Buy the size (inside diameter) you need and slit one side (I used a seam ripper ). Press the cord into the tubing and you have something the cats can’t chew through, and it doesn’t look bad. I have this on all my lamp cords and speaker wires. You can remove it when you want to and it can also be a permanent solution.
It turns out a little stiffer than the original but is much cheaper and costs less than new cords. Cats and kittens are going to chew anyway.
