When internet usage started becoming widespread I think about 15 years ago there was a lot of talk that the?
internet was going to empower people – level the playing field. People that didn’t before were going to have access to information and marketing tools and would have tremendous opportunities. No doubt some people have been empowered by the internet. But 15 years later poverty and homelessness in America are greater that they were 15 years ago. Would it be accurate to say that all the talk about the internet making society better and fairer was a bunch of overblown hype?
Ever here the saying “You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink”? It applies here. Unless you live in a shack in the woods like Ted Kaczynski, you have access to the Internet. Every public library has computers set up for you to use.
But that’s only one part of the equation. You can provide all the access you want, but if people CHOOSE to not use it, that is their problem, not society’s. They have the same access to the same information you and I have, but they decide to sit at home and complain about their situation instead of going out and doing something about it.
